Mui Ne Beach

Mui Ne (also called “Phan Thiet”) of Vietnam is a sleepy fishing town 200 km (4.5 hour drive) northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The region is beautiful with many sand dunes and white sand beaches, crystal clear water. The beach is good for anyone who likes to relax and have easy holidays. Accommodations here are good with many luxurious resorts and bungalows with private beaches. Some resorts have private beaches. It is not neccessary to join any Mui Ne tours since you can rent a mortorbike and discover the world of sand yourselve intriguingly!

WEATHER AND CLIMATE
Mui Ne has a dry and a "rainy" season. The dry season runs from October to April, but even the "rainy" season from May to September has a lot of nice weather. Usually it rains only one or two hours a day and then the sun is back again. The temperature is around 25 - 30oC all year. Mui Ne is among the locations in Vietnam with the least rainfall.

Most of the Mui Ne's attractions concentrate along the 22km road from Phan Thiet, that make it become more scenic.
 

   

Hon Rom stone ground: The picturesque scenery in the tourism complex of Hon Rom Island has a magic attraction by many strange shaped stones opposite the sea.

Suoi Tien (Fairy Stream): This is a small ravine nearby Hon Rom stone ground, an ideal place for a nice walk inside the ravishing sand valley. Along the stream lie various luring red and white natural stalactites.

Yellow sand hill: The massive sand hill with fancy colors spreading over tens of kilometers along Binh Thuan to Ninh Thuan Province has been the endless inspiration for international awarded photographs. This is also chosen as a tourism symbol of Mui Ne.

Po Shanu Cham Tower: Once the hallmark of the prosperous Champa Kingdom, which thrived in this region from around the 7th century to 1832, Poshanu Cham Towers are perched on a hilltop with views of Phan Thiet and the distant coastline. In spite of their limited size, Po Shanu Cham Towers are still worth a visit for their solemn yet luring beauty as a quintessence of the Cham architecture.

White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang or Bau Sen): Lie in the middle of immense white sand dunes two natural fresh water lake. This place is especially spectacular during summer, when the red lotus blossoms alternates with white sand dunes. Definitely a must-see in Mui Ne.

 

EAT & DRINK

Besides the natural attractions, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne is also well known for its diverse yet fine cuisine. 

       
 

Sizzling cake (Banh xeo): are Vietnamese savoury pancakes made of rice flour, water, turmeric powder, and, in the southern region, coconut milk, stuffed with slivers of fatty pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts and then pan fried.

Lau Tha: a seafood hot pot, is a very popular dish in the central coast of Phan Thiet City which is a must for visitors to the area.

"Banh it tom thit" (glutinous rice cake with meat and shrimp): The most popular dish to the locals for its delicious taste and long time existence. The cake is made from sticky rice while its stuffing is very nutritious with ground pork and shrimp mixed with spring onion and other spices.

Seafood salad: Raw fish may be made with a variety of fish such as herring, carving, cleaning fish, spring fish ... but not any kind of fish is as good as Cá Mai  for fresh meat. As the name implies, fish mai delicate slender, about equal to the index finger, covered with a layer of sparkling silver-white scales.

Another attractive seafood salad to try is thorny snail salad. Luscious thorny snail meat is mixed with boiled pork, many kind of veggies, fried onions and roasted pea nuts and served with sour sweet fish sauce.

"Can" cake (Banh Can) “Banh can” is a popular snack in Central and Southern regions of Vietnam, including rice flour, lard, spring onion and eggs. The cakes are sold in pair, and served with special sweet and sour dipping sauce made from Nha Trang’s famous fish sauce, and raw vegetables.

Minced fried "Dong"  with banh phong tom (glutinous rice chapatti mixed with powdered shrimp): This is the most special food of Mui Ne with the "dong", a small reptile living in the sand holes. Looking alike a lizard, the "dong" is 20-30cm long. Its meat is especially tasty, strong and sweet, which is also considered as an medical food. Many dishes could be made from this creature such as roasted, fried, grilled or steamed dish which all are in very good taste.

GETTING THERE AND AWAY

By road: Mui Ne is 200km from Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon) to the south and another 200km from Nha Trang to the north, the drive takes 4.5 hours. The road conditions are very good with not too busy traffic.
By train: There are local trains (soft or hard seats in air-con or non-air-con carriages) from Saigon to Nha Trang which stop at Phan Thiet Railway Station or Muong Man Railway Station. The train journey takes 5 hours.
